ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY

Limiting our impact on the environment is a fundamental part of our business and is something everyone in Kaplanlar takes seriously.  Kaplanlar  senior management will define objectives and targets to achieve the highest practicable standard of environmental performance for the Company.

We safeguard our environment by:

• acting responsibly in every aspect of our operations.  We comply with all relevant laws and continually seek to improve our own contribution to an environmentally sustainable society;

• providing appropriate information, training and resources to every member of the Kaplanlar  team to ensure we continually improve our environmental performance;

• identifying significant environmental aspects that affect our business;

• ensuring that Kaplanlar has a procedure for responding to accidents and emergencies and for preventing or mitigating resulting environmental impacts;

• carrying out regular audits in each of our units to reduce the environmental impact of our work in every way practical;

• limiting effluent discharges and emissions.  We follow a global set of effluent and emission standards;

• following a policy of reduce, reuse or recycle materials wherever practicable;

• encouraging our suppliers and contractors to reduce their environmental impact;

• regularly providing information and updates on our environmental performance to stakeholders.

We will regularly review this Environmental Policy to ensure it helps us meet our agreed goals.

REFLECTIONS ON ENVIRONMENT

What is global warming? This is a fair question, as much is written and said about “global warming”. The term is often misused and people tend ask questions like, 'do you believe in global warming?' It is difficult to know where to start when answering, What is Global Warming? This is because there are other hidden questions buried in the original one. Many people when asking the first question, are often also wanting to know if the warming is attributed to human activity; are greenhouse gases building up in the atmosphere?; and is the warming something they should be concerned about? The short answer to all those questions is YES!

'What is Global Warming', is only part of the story and it doesn't tell us when this might happen. What we do know is that global warming has occurred in the past, and it is also happening right now.

Our Earth is heating up, and heating up quickly.

We all have a 'carbon footprint', which is a measure of the amount of carbon dioxide(CO2) emitted through the combustion of fossil fuels. This is directly related to the amount of natural resources consumed, and is increasingly used or referred to as a measure of environmental impact.

We take the Global Warming seriously and  are concerned about its dire consequences for our planet .

Energy saving is an important topic which concerns us not only for the environmental aspects which we take into account seriously but also for the increasing energy costs which we address to in our line of work.

Kaplanlar develops and manufactures commercial refrigerated display cabinets which are cooled by a refrigerating system. The main components of our products are made of steel, copper, aluminium, plastics and glass. The accessories consist of electrical equipment, fittings and other assembly parts.

In our R&D center we have extensive development activities focused on energy savings with the aim of reducing energy costs and limiting our impact on the environment.

Supermarkets contribute both directly and indirectly to global warming. Directly; through emission of greenhouse gases to atmosphere because of the leakage of HFC refrigerants (such as R404A, R134a, R407C) used in refrigeration systems of their food display and storage units. These refrigerants have a very high global warming potential. Additionally, supermarkets are also indirectly responsible for producing CO2 as they consume vast amount of electricity, and approximately 50% of this consumption is through refrigeration equipment.

The Montreal Protocol, which was signed by 197 countries under the auspices of the United Nations in 1987, has prohibited the use of ozone-depleting CFC and HCFC refrigerants. The use of HFC refrigerants, however, is not prohibited and these refrigerants are in common use in the industry.Even though non-ozone depleting some of the HFC refrigerants have high global warming potential(GWP), therefore,amendment was made to The Montreal Protocol on 15 October 2016 in Kigali, Rwanda to phase-down HFCs. With the Kigali Amendment,countries agreed to add HFCs to the list of controlled substances, and approved a timeline for their gradual reduction by 80-85 per cent by the late 2040s. In recent years natural refrigerants have been proposed as an environmentally friendly solution for the refrigeration industry, these refrigerants which include hydrocarbons and carbon dioxide, do not contribute to ozone depletion and have low global warming potentials.
